When it comes to calibrating your calibration equipment, not all services are created equal.
You may have heard terms like “ISO/IEC 17025 accredited,” “traceable,” or “NIST traceable,” and wondered what they really mean for the accuracy and reliability of your instruments.

At Beamex, we often get questions from engineers and quality managers about accreditation and whether using an accredited lab really makes a difference.

To give you some context, the calibration laboratory at Beamex headquarters in Finland has been ISO 17025 accredited since 1993, making it one of the first labs in the industry to gain accreditation. At the time, I was involved in the accreditation work as the quality manager. More recently, our North American lab achieved ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation as well.

What is Calibration Lab Accreditation?

In simple terms, accreditation is the formal recognition that a laboratory is technically competent to perform specific calibrations.

An independent accreditation body assesses the lab against an international standard (ISO/IEC 17025, which we’ll discuss shortly) to ensure the lab’s quality system and technical procedures meet the standard’s rigorous requirements. If the lab passes this thorough evaluation, it becomes an accredited lab and can issue accredited calibration certificates. These certificates are backed by the accreditation body and feature the body's logo as proof of the lab's ability to provide accurate, traceable measurements.

Importantly, calibration accreditation is handled by national accreditation bodies around the world, for example, FINAS in Finland, A2LA in the United States, UKAS in the UK, and DAkkS in Germany. These bodies all adhere to the same international criteria under the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). Through the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA), accreditations are globally recognized across borders. This means an ISO 17025 accredited calibration certificate from one country’s lab is accepted as valid and equivalent in other countries. In short, accreditation creates a worldwide trust network.

It’s worth noting that ISO/IEC 17025 is the core standard for calibration/testing lab competence, and accreditation bodies use it as the basis for accrediting labs. Next, let’s briefly look at ISO 17025 and how a lab can gain accreditation.

 

What is ISO/IEC 17025?

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard that defines the general requirements for competence in testing and calibration laboratories. In simple terms, it sets a framework for labs to ensure their work is accurate, reliable, and technically sound.

Achieving ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation isn’t just about having good paperwork. It’s about proving that the lab has the people, processes, and equipment to deliver valid results. Let’s look at some of the key areas covered by the standard:

  • Quality Management System (QMS): Similar to ISO 9001, the lab must have a documented system for managing quality. But ISO 17025 goes further, with a focus on technical details specific to calibration. A lab might be ISO 9001 certified but still not capable of accurate calibration. ISO 17025 fills that gap.
  • Technical Competence: The lab must show that it uses validated calibration methods, operates a controlled environment, and has qualified staff using properly calibrated equipment. Everything must support reliable results.
  • Measurement Traceability: All measurements must be traceable to the International System of Units (SI) through an unbroken, documented chain of calibrations that link the measurement result to national standards, such as NIST in the US.
  • Uncertainty and Reporting: Accredited labs must report measurement uncertainty and provide documentation in their calibration certificates. This tells you both what was measured and the uncertainty of those measurements.

ISO 17025 accreditation is widely seen as the gold standard for calibration labs because it shows that a lab doesn’t just claim competence, it proves it through independent evaluation.

 

Non-Accredited Calibration vs. Accredited Calibration

Calibration services are often labeled as “NIST traceable” or simply “traceable,” which can sound reassuring. This typically means that the measurement standards used in the calibration have an unbroken chain of comparisons back to a national metrology institute. While traceability is important, it’s not the whole story.

A non-accredited lab can still offer traceable calibrations, but there’s no third party verifying how they perform the work, so there may be gaps in the lab’s processes. There is no way to verify whether the technicians are properly trained, whether environmental conditions are controlled, or whether the methods the lab uses are documented and validated. With a non-accredited lab there’s often no requirement to report measurement uncertainty, or even to provide full “as found” and “as left” data. The quality and credibility of the result depends entirely on the lab’s internal practices.

Accredited calibration includes traceability, but goes further. An accredited lab is evaluated by an independent accreditation body (such as A2LA, FINAS, or UKAS) according to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. That means its calibration methods, quality system, environmental conditions, staff competence, reference standards, and uncertainty calculations are all assessed regularly. The resulting calibration certificate includes detailed results, uncertainty, and the accrediting body’s logo, giving you confidence that it will be accepted in audits or by customers.

Let’s look at an example to illustrate the difference between traceable and accredited calibration. If you bought a NIST-traceable reference and performed calibration at home, say in your garage, without temperature control or training, technically your results might still be “traceable”. But would you trust them for a regulated or critical application? Accreditation makes traceability meaningful by ensuring the process behind the numbers meets international quality and competence standards.

But what about uncertainty? Many non-accredited calibration certificates include only raw measurement data without stating measurement uncertainty. But without measurement uncertainty, there’s no way to judge how reliable the results are, or whether the lab’s reference standard was accurate enough for the job. In the worst case, a calibrator could be out of spec even though the certificate still shows “good” numbers, because the uncertainty was never considered or reported. Without this context, the calibration results can be misleading – and potentially risky.

So, while “traceable” calibrations aren’t bad by definition, only accredited calibrations give you the full package: traceability with verified competence, repeatability, and internationally recognized credibility.

Using an accredited calibration lab does more than protect your instruments. It helps protect your entire process and business reputation. Here are some of the key benefits:

5. Traceability with Meaning
Every measurement result is linked to national or international standards, with the added assurance of a documented and independently verified traceability path. This means your measurement results are traceable with proven integrity.

For many customers, using accredited calibration is part of their own quality promise. Providing documentation from an accredited source can strengthen credibility with clients, partners, and auditors.

 

Know Your Lab’s Limits

Accreditation alone does not guarantee that the lab’s processes are accurate enough to calibrate your calibrator. Every accredited lab operates under a defined scope of accreditation that lists what it is authorized to calibrate and with what uncertainty. So, accreditation alone doesn’t guarantee that the lab can handle every type of device. For example, a general-purpose lab might not have sufficient uncertainty to calibrate a high-accuracy multifunction calibrator. Always check whether the lab’s capabilities match the accuracy requirements of your instrument.

 

The Key Differences Between Accredited and Non-Accredited Calibration

While both accredited and non-accredited labs may offer “traceable” calibrations, there are important differences in how the work is performed and documented, as well as in how it is accepted by regulators or auditors. Accreditation isn’t just a label; it reflects a verified level of technical competence and quality.

Here’s a summary of the key differences between an accredited lab and a non-accredited lab:

Some non-accredited labs operate responsibly and use good practices. However, without accreditation, customers have no externally verified proof that the lab meets international standards. Accreditation provides that proof.
